Biodegradable Plastic from Japan

I ran across an article from November 2024 that talks about a new plastic that the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and the University of Tokyo have created. It dissolves in 10 days in soil and starts degrading within hours in salt water. The article says it degrades to something similar to fertilizer. This seems great for soil but my concern is the effects it may have in water. In other unrelated articles, I have previously read that too much fertilizer (specifically nitrogen and phosphorus) in water causes dense marine and fresh water plant growth, which chokes out the animal life due to lack of oxygen. Too much fertilizer also plays a role in acidification and unhealthy bleached coral. I’m not a scientist so maybe I’m worried about this for nothing. Maybe this new plastic wouldn’t lead to the same problem, but I will see what else I can discover. And I will see if this new plastic gains market shares.
